Fertility decline in Andhra Pradesh. A search for alternative hypotheses

The paper examines the levels, trends and pattern in fertility both at the state and district level using census, Sample Registration System, and National Family Health Survey data, 1951-60 to 1993/94. Factors behind the decline are then considered. The role of female literacy and health status, and the reduction in rural poverty and unemployment to give rising standards of living, are cited as important factors. Comparisons are made with Kerala and Tamil Nadu throughout.
