Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) has clearly become a pan-European problem and requires a reliable diagnostic test. Priority should be given to developing a diagnostic test that can reliably identify animals incubating the disease and people incubating its human form, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Such a test would be a valuable epidemiologic tool, and it would permit the exclusion of infected animals from the human food chain.
