The authors describe their experiments on immediate immobilization and recovery in Greyface ewes using etorphine injected directly into the cephalic vein, and conclude that, for mature sheep, a dose of 0.1 ml for ewes weighing under 130 lb 0.15 ml for ewes over 130 lb is ideal for immobilization. Among 278 administrations, only 18 failures of the initial dose were recorded; these were mostly related to unsuccessful injection into the vein, when the adopted procedure was to inject 0.1 ml i/m. The reviving effect of diprenorphine took on average 2-3 minutes.
