Coronary atherosclerosis in the acute stage was diagnosed in 16 men and 15 women between 40 and 68 years old with stenocardia but with no circulatory disorder. Values for phospholipids and cholesterol esters were lower and values for free cholesterol, monoglycerides, diglycerides and triglycerides were higher in patients with coronary atherosclerosis than in healthy controls. Clinical improvement was accompanied by an increase in cholesterol esters and a corresponding fall in free cholesterol. The change in total cholesterol was less and appeared later.
