Twenty-two cases of hepatic hydatidosis (in Turkey) were evaluated and treated by surgery between December 1995 and March 1998. Perioperative albendazole treatment was given at a dose of 12-15 mg/kg/day in 4 divided doses. The treatment was started 5-20 days before surgery and continued for 3-7 months, until latex agglutination tests were negative. In the postoperative period, haematological, ultrasonography and computed tomography evaluations were carried out. The follow-up period for 21 patients was 6-31 months (mean: 20.52 months). There was no secondary hydatidosis, recurrence or mortality. Early morbidity (wound infection) and late morbidity (incisional hernia and infection of the cystic cavity) rates were 4.54 and 13.63% respectively. It is concluded that perioperative albendazole treatment is effective in the prevention of secondary hydatidosis.
