On the basis of monthly visits over 3-5 yr to married women aged 15-44 yr residing in 11 Punjab villages, histories were obtained of some 1, 300 that provided information about interpregnancy intervals, defined as intervals from delivery to next conception. Lactation substantially prolonged post-partum amenorrhoea. When an infant survived 1 month or more, lactation usually lasted well over 1 yr and the median length of the amenorrhoea was 10 months for women aged 20-29 yr and 12 months for those aged >30 yr, whereas if the child was stillborn or died in the 1st month of life the mother did not lactate and the median length of the amenorrhoea was -2 months.
