50 day old Sprague-Dawley rats injected daily with hormones for the 10 days immediately preceding treatment with 7,12-dimethylbenzanthracene (20 mg/os) showed in statistically significant terms, after 180 days of observation that: 1) 0.07 mg estradiol, and 0.26 mg testosterone propionate exert a protective action against the occurrence of the mammary tumors; 2) 1.18 mg progesterone and pregnant mare serum gonadotropin, 0.03 IU, while ineffective against the induction of tumors, do however retard the times of their appearance; 3) the association of estradiol-progesterone did not give results diverse from those obtained with estradiol alone; estradiol-testosterone propionate, although giving a high percentage of protection, did not show additive effects; 4) the addition of 0.03 IU of serum gonadotropin to each of the 2 preceding associations did not cause any increase in activity. No relationship was established between morphological effects of the hormones on the mammary gland and the incidence of the induced tumors.
