Protein malnutrition in South India

Clinical examination of over 4500 children under the age of 5 years, from poor families in 10 regions of South India, showed that 38 had kwashiorkor, though they were not in hospital. In hospital records kwashiorkor accounted for from 1 2 to 16.6 per cent. of the paediatric patients admitted. Over half the infants were breast fed to the age of 18 months; the average intake of breast milk rose up to the age of 6 months and then fell.
