Taiwan receives approximately 2 million international visitors a year but growth has been sluggish for most of the past decade. It relies heavily on Japan, which accounts for nearly half of all visitors, and is therefore very dependent on the vicissitudes of the Japanese market. Other major sources are the USA, Hong Kong and South Korea, and together these four key markets account for over 75% of all arrivals. The share of pleasure arrivals has been declining and in 1990 represented only 54% of all visitors. Taiwan suffers from being a high cost destination, from having a low tourism profile and from inadequate or non-existent air links with important market sources, particularly Europe and Australasia.
