Field and laboratory investigations were made after the death from severe diarrhoea of 15 of 71 cattle on a farm in central-west Taiwan in 1986. Cercariae were found in 101 of 593 Oncomelania snails, and adult worms developed in 10 of 14 albino mice exposed to the cercariae. Schistosoma japonicum eggs were found in faecal specimens from 2 of 4 dogs, 2 of 5 goats and 4 of 16 cattle. No human cases were observed, and it is not known whether this strain is purely zoophilic.Sheila M. Crewe.
