This article outlines the epidemiology of HIV/AIDS in Taiwan and describes the control measures that have been implemented by the National AIDS Control Programme. Although the overall incidence of the disease is relatively low, the number of infected people is rapidly increasing. In 1996 the highest reporting rate was recorded-a total of 276 HIV-infected residents were reported, including 156 with AIDS. The incidence rate in 1996 for HIV infection was 1.4 cases per 100 000 population compared with 1.1 cases per 100 000 population in 1995.
