Cleavage of cholesterol, diosgenin and solasodine side chains by five Mycobacterium mutant strains to yield 17-ketosteroids was studied. Mycobacterium sp. NRRL B-3683 transformed cholesterol and diogenin to 17-ketosteroids up to 18.3 and 9.8% respectively, whereas 10.9% transformation of solasodine was obtained using Mycobacteirum sp. NRRL B-3805.
