A stallion just imported from West Germany successfully served four of six mares, but seven mares served in the following two weeks developed equine coital exanthema (ECE) and failed to conceive. Neutralization titres of the first six mares were all less than 1, but titres of the seven affected mares ranged from 2.8 to 45, and the stallion's titre increased from 45 to 256. The high titre in the stallion and the presence of depigmented areas on the penis indicated a recurrence of an established infection. Three of the infected mares were subsequently mated again with this stallion, and two became pregnant. Cross neutralization tests indicated that the causal virus was identical with strains from other countries.
