1. Peritoneal macrophages from Listeria monocytogenes infected mice are able to kill ingested Listeria, in contrast with macrophages from normal mice in which intracellular multiplication is not hindered. 2. Injection into mice of Listeria killed either by heat or by ethanol and chloroform, does not induce an increase of the bactericidal power of the macrophages. 3. Increased cellular resistance occurs four days after infection and lasts one month at least. 4. Increased cellular resistance to infection in vitro persists at least fifteen days in macrophages kept in tissue culture medium. 5. Macrophages from Listeria infected mice do inhibit intracellular multiplication of Listeria and Brucella melitensis, but do not affect the intracellular multiplication of Corynebacterium kustcheri.
