According to this statistical analysis, only the lowest dose employed (0.024 mg/kg bw/day) seems to lie at or near a no-effect level. On the other hand, if the induction of only hepatocellular carcinomas is considered, it is striking that a dose-related effect is observable in the three lower dosage groups, with 6/34 animals in group 2, 2/75 animals in group 3 and 1/78 animals in group 4 bearing a hepatocellular carcinoma, versus 0/40 in the control group. This tumour type very rarely occurs spontaneously in the rat strain used. It might therefore be suspected that even the very low dose of 0.024 mg/kg bw/day of NPIP may have some effect in the liver. This might possibly be clarified by a carefully designed and controlled animal experiment, using a sufficiently large number of animals. It may be concluded from the present results that NPIP is a very strong carcinogen in rats and has about the same carcinogenic potency as NDMA or NDEA.
