CO2-powered hand and arm devices were developed and fitted on patients at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital during the years 1958 to 1965. Occupational therapy evaluation and training techniques were developed and used enabling the occupational therapist to contribute to the practical application and evaluation of these devices. It is important that occupational therapists keep pace with current knowledge of bracing, that they develop a knowledge of specific functional requirements of the arm and hand and contribute ideas in the area of brace development. This will help insure devices that are as functional as they are technically appealing.
