Serum levels of norethisterone (NET), progesterone and estradiol-17.beta. (E2-17.beta.) were determined at frequent intervals in a control cycle and thereafter for 32 wk following repeated i.m. injections of 200 mg norethisterone oenanthate at intervals of 56 days in two healthy normally menstruating women. One of them, obese and sedentary in habit, had high NET levels following the injections and had frequent episodes of prolonged menstrual bleeding requiring endometrial curettage. Highest levels of NET (6-13 ng/ml) were observed at 2 wk following the injection and then declined gradually. NET could be estimated in the serum 15 wk after the last injection. Serum progesterone levels suggestive of luteal cell function were recorded in 1 subject as early as 56 days and in both subjects after the 3rd injection. Endometrial biopsy showed a lack of secretory activity in both the cases.
