National census data for 1971 and studies carried out by the Population Centre in 1974, 1975, and 1979 have been utilized to provide a demographic profile of the rural area of Sultanpur district. Population growth in Sultanpur is generally lower than that in Uttar Pradesh as a whole, with a 16.1% increase between 1961-71 compared to 18.2% in Uttar Pradesh. The relatively lower percentage of children under 14 in Sultanpur than in Uttar Pradesh as a whole may result from greater infant mortality. The uneven sex ratio in the age group 20-49 probably results from heavier male emigration. Only .59% of women 50 and older have never married, compared to 4.8% of men the same age. 35% of women are widows by age 50, compared to 20% of men. Average age of wives in the 931 couples interviewed was 31.1 and of husbands 33.4 years. 91% of the population was Hindu and 9% was Muslim. About 40% of Hindu husbands were illiterate compared to 31% of the Muslims. The percentage of agricultural laborers was 25.3 among Muslims and 17.9 among Hindus. Higher unemployment was reported for Muslim than Hindu men. The majority of respondents were married by age 19. Average number of children ever born was 3.65 for Hindus and 3.07 for Muslims.
