Samples of sweet potatoes and the soil in which they had been grown were taken in 1969 in nine States (Alabama, California, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Jersey, Texas and Virginia) and analysed for residues of organochlorine insecticides. Residues of DDTR (DDT, DDD (TDE) and DDE combined), chlordane and dieldrin averaged 1.19, 0.28 and 1.17 p.p.m., respectively, in the soil. Residues in the sweet potatoes were generally less than 0.01 p.p.m. DDTR was detected in 28.3 and dieldrin in 18.5% of the samples of sweet potatoes.
