In recent weeks, cancer researcher Marek Wronski has exposed what the scientist argues is a widespread case of plagiarism. Wronski argues that Andrzej Jendryczko, a chemical engineer and former professor at the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland, together with a dozen or more coauthors, published at least 30 biomedical research papers that repeat word for word passages from other authors without crediting them. Wronski has brought into question the ability of the Polish scientific establishment to investigate itself. The charges have shaken two leading universities, made headlines in Polish newspapers, and provoked concern from Andrzej Wiszniewski, the head of science funding in Poland.
