Babesiosoma mariae occurred in various freshwater fishes in Africa and was transmitted by the leech Batracobdelloides tricarinata. Its life cycle was studied in experimentally infected leeches and 8 species of fish. Other parasites of African fishes described previously as belonging to the family Dactylosomatidae were probably Babesiosoma mariae.
