Several developments related to Hydroxyurea (HU) were described at the 12th World AIDS Conference. HU was shown effective in combination with other drugs in substantially reducing viral loads. One study showed that HU increases the capacity of two new drugs, adefovir and PMPA, to achieve viral suppression, even with the multi- drug resistant form of the virus. Some presentations described how HU enhances the activity of nucleoside analogs, and others discussed HU's effects on salvage therapy with drug experienced patients. Information is included on the results of the ACTG-307 trial and on opportunities for the study participants to roll over to new trials. HU is now being studied at several dosage levels, which will help determine the smallest, yet most effective dose to use.
