The writers discuss the relationship between the production of food, population growth, and the environment. They argue that the questions of sustainability of global food production and access to basic nutritional requirements should be not be studied separately. The link between these two questions is shown in the interactions between ecological and economic systems that operate chiefly at the geographically localized level, a link that policy interventions must target.
