The impact of population on critical resources is discussed with regard to the debate on population growth, patterns and migration on environmental degradation. Evidence is reviewed with regard to population impact on commercial energy production and consumption; industrial and municipal wastes; deforestation; land degradation and desertification; fresh water; urbanization; and poverty. It is argued that distortionary social, economic and political factors of which population growth is not a part, are the ultimate causes of environmental degradation. These must be rectified if conservation and sustainability are to be achieved. To break the cycle of economic stagnation, rapid population growth and environmental degradation in the Third World will require unparalleled international efforts.
