In this issue, the laboratories of J. R. Sanes and H. Betz report that the protein gephyrin is required for the formation of inhibitory synapses in the spinal cord and brain. The role of the protein, which is associated with glycine receptors, was uncovered by targeted gene disruption. Their findings demonstrate a fascinating connection between gephyrin and neurological diseases related to molybdenum deficiency.
