In this issue, T. B. McCord et al. present the latest in a series of stunning discoveries about Jupiter's moon Europa. Following analysis of infrared spectrometry data, the researchers suggest that some of the moon's whole landscapes are paved with hydrated salt and others consist of almost pure ice. The plausibility of McCord et al.'s suggestion that the new result is a discovery regarding the nature of the hydrated water and a likely interpretation of the abundance of the substance to which the water is bound are explored.
