Jupiter's moon Europa may hold beneath its icy surface an ocean more vast than the total oceanic water on Earth. Voyager images of the moon's strangely flat, almost crater-free surface sparked speculation about an ocean. Gravity field data from the Galileo mission to Jupiter shows the moon's water layer averages 80 to 170 kilometers in thickness, and Galileo magnetometer data implies that some of this may be liquid.
