Lectins and their glycosylated receptors in relation to tick-transmitted pathogen are reviewed. They participate in the reciprocal protein-saccharide interactions in the transmission of tickborne encephalitis virus and Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. by the ticks. The functional significance of the tick tissue-specific lectins as well the lectins and agglutinins of the transmitted pathogens in the molecular ecology of the tickborne diseases is addressed.
