This brief review discusses major sources of the aluminium in man and its clinical and experimental toxicology. Diagnosis, prevention and treatment of Al overload are also considered. Moreover, acute and chronic toxicity studies, behavioural and neurofibrillar changes, mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, and reproductive and developmental effects of the metal are reviewed. Al, in ordinary circumstances, can accumulate in patients on long-term haemodialysis, which has been associated with various disorders.
