Polarizational microscopy was used for examination of normal lens in men and rabbits (30), lens in senile cataract (30), of patients after cataract extraction and lens in experimental hemophthalmos in rabbit (20). Native or fixated in formalin lens in a fresh state (a smear) and dehydrated lens (grinded powder) were studied under microscope. The data obtained with polarizational microscopy showed changes in optic properties of the whole mass of the lens substance in cataract (change in refraction index, rise in anisotropy, appearance of interferentional staining, etc.) and in separate cases of brown and black cataract the presence of true solid crystal formed in the lens in vivo, the latter being of great importance. These data speak about phasic change of the lens substance from the state of paracrystal spherolith of a normal lens into the state of solid crystals. The chemical nature of these crystals remains obscure till now. However, the data of polarizational micros ropy, already now, presents a great interest, because they indicate to a number of physicochemical and phasic changes in the lens substance.
