The concentration of serum total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triacylglycerols was measured in 692 men and women 35-50 years, living in the Cab-Bon area of northern Tunisia. The sample was randomly selected from the National Institute of Statistics census list. No significant trends with age were observed for the 4 lipid variables. Mean lipid values mean were higher in women than men, and in urban than rural subjects. It is concluded that urbanization is an important determining factor in serum lipid concentrations.
