Healthy dogs given single doses of clioquinol (Vioform) up to 1000 mg/kg did not show any signs of disease. However, three out of seven dogs weighing 8-12 kg showed signs of toxicity when fouled herring (30 g per kg body wt) was given for three days with food, followed by administration of clioquinol and fat emulsion (5-10 cal per kg body wt). Symptoms were identical to those described by Schant & Wikstrom (V.B. 35, abst. 3565). Results support the hypothesis that an intestinal disorder may enhance the susceptibility to clioquinol and thus be the major cause of the medical intoxication.
