Two types of virus isolated from pulmonary adenomatosis tumours of sheep in Kenya were propagated in foetal sheep lung cells and demonstrated by electron microscopy. One resembled and induced cellular changes characterized by the formation of syncytia typically produced by the 'slow viruses' of progressive pneumonia, 'zwoegerziekte', maedi, and visna. A herpes-like virus was isolated from an experimentally produced case of sheep pulmonary adenomatosis with lesions typical of the disease. This virus did not induce the formation of syncytia but altered cells so that they rounded up and formed clusters. These cells easily detached from the monolayer and underwent limited multiplication in suspension. The latter virus may be involved in the aetiology of pulmonary adenomatosis.
