A new tobacco mosaic virus strain K2 was selected from a population of the TMV Kazakh isolate. Its biological properties were described, and genomic RNA (6383 nucleotides) was sequenced. Comparing the nucleotide sequence of TMV-K2 RNA with RNA of other viruses proved that it is most similar to that of tomato mosaic virus (ToMV), being only one nucleotide shorter. The two RNAs have 41 nucleotide differences resulting in only seven amino acid changes. Five of these pertain to the coat protein and are all nonhomologous; two changes are found in the most conserved domains of tobamovirus coat proteins. It is suggested that these mutations cause differences in symptoms induced by ToMV and TMVK2.
