In the August 8, 1997 issue, John Sedivy at Brown University and colleagues report the successful creation of a nonimmortalized cell strain with a homozygous deletion in a critical protein, p21, using fetal human lung fibroblasts as the primary cell. The relative difficulty of gene targeting in human embryos as opposed to, for example, chicken or mouse embryos, is discussed.
