Weight and length were measured for 1114 children from 3 to 36 months old from underprivileged socioeconomic groups. They were all attending child health centres in Addis Ababa. Mean weight and length for age for all ages were around the -2 SD of the Swedish norm (NAR 29, 6006). When weights for lengths were expressed as percentages of the Boston standard 53.9% of the children had standard weight for length and 33.4% were within the 81 to 90% range. As the children grew older the rate of weight gain fell behind that of growth in length.
