From 2427 negro children in Memphis, Tennessee, belonging to families with a median annual income of $1838, 300 were selected at random. Infant mortality among those people was 2 or 3 times the average for the city, and incidence of low birthweight was about twice as high. The children ranged in age from 0.5 month to 6 years, and the numbers of boys and girls were nearly the same.
