37 S. gallinarum-pullorum strains were isolated from fowls at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, between 1986 and 1996. All strains except one belonged to the biovar pullorum. 33 isolates were from commercial flocks and 4 isolates were from backyard flocks. 10 of 12 chicks and 10 of 25 adult birds showed clinical signs of disease. All isolates were sensitive in vitro to ampicillin, apramycin, chloramphenicol, enrofloxacin, furazolidone, neomycin, oxytetracycline, polymyxin B, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim.
