This study highlights a number of implications for the women's midwifery care. These relate to the relief of boredom (and possibly reduction of smoking), flexible visiting hours, sensitivity to the needs of the family as a whole, planned information-giving, and the opportunity to express fears and anxieties. Women hospitalised in pregnancy are not ill, and hence their care cannot be based on an approach that centres on illness and patienthood. Their care has to be based on a health model and include individualised assessment of need and planned midwifery care, emphasising client participation and education. There is also a need to examine other options to hospitalisation for some women experiencing pregnancy complications.
