The Mekong Delta of Vietnam is rich in agricultural production, but poor in infrastructure due to low-lying land with a dense river-network and high annual floods. Credit support and agricultural extension are the priority needs of farmers. The primary responsibility of Cantho University is teaching, training, research and transfer of technology to contribute to socioeconomic and cultural development and to increased agricultural production in the Mekong Delta. Activities, which will improve the life of women and children, are other important tasks, especially undertaken by the University's women staff. The women staff of the University established the Interdisciplinary Women Scientists' Group in order to respond to the urgent requirements for social development of the region. They have implemented projects in various fields, including basic and applied research in natural, social, medical and agricultural sciences, socioeconomic development for rural areas, educational development and environmental protection. The overall objective of the projects is to empower the women scientists and the local women's associations to effectively assist village women to improve the livelihoods of themselves and their families.
