Data were collected on the first 100 patients operated on for hepatic hydatidosis (Echinococcus granulosus) by the same team in 2 different surgical units (Zeralda Hospital and the Central Clinic of Algiers, Algeria). There were 71 females and 29 males and the mean age was 37 years (range 7 to 65). Abdominal pain (in 82%), hepatomegaly (in 44%) and fever (in 20%) were the main presenting signs. Biliary fistula was the most common complication (in 70% of those with complications: cysts in segments VII and VIII were responsible for just over half of the biliary fistulae) and pain (78%), jaundice (18%) and fever (11%) were the main clinical signs.
