Lactose intolerance in Kenya

Of 45 African children, 28 showed lactose intolerance (a blood glucose increase of <20 mg/100 ml after oral loading with 2 g lactose/kg body wt.). Symptoms after lactose loading were not observed. Average milk consumption was estimated to be 250 ml/day. Increase in serum alpha -amino acid N above the fasting level, after consumption of 340 ml milk, was the same in lactose tolerant and intolerant children. Of 22 intolerant children of 5-12 yr who had received 250 ml milk, 2 had increased faecal excretion of lactic acid; only 2 of 6 intolerant children of 5-15 yr had increased lactic acid excretion after drinking 600 ml milk. 17% of 35 children of 1-3 yr, recovering from malnutrition, had increased excretion after 250-500 ml milk.
