A population study of the prevalence of LI in the Korean adults by upper gastrointestinal series using lactose-barium mixture was conducted. The material consisted of 161 males and 139 females who had no apparent diseases or clinical symptoms. The age ranged from 17 to 83 years. Samples were randomly taken from the metropolis and five out of eight mainland provinces in S. Korea. The nationwide incidence of LI was 75.7 per cent, and the Koreans may be classified as a high-incidence race. No positive correlation was noted between frequency of milk intake and LI. Neither was there any relationship between socio-economic status and LI. It was found that incidence of LI increased gradually with age reaching 100 per cent after the age of 70 years.
