Lactose intolerance in chronic diarrhea among Indonesian children

20 of 50 children (1 month-4 yr) with chronic diarrhoea and with clinical signs of sugar intolerance had watery and bulky faeces with pH 4-6 and sugar content 0.5-2%. Lactose loading tests on 6 subjects revealed flat or abnormally low blood glucose curves; these children recovered when normal milk in their diet was changed to formulae containing 1-1.4% lactose.
