Three cases of hip prostheses infected by C. albicans are reported in patients (2 female, 1 male, aged 42-67 yr) from the USA. All 3 patients had risk factors for fungal infections: previous surgery, renal transplant, steroids, rheumatoid arthritis and alcoholism. The prosthesis was removed in each case. One patient was treated with amphotericin B but died of end-stage renal disease; one received amphotericin B and fluconazole but suffered persistent infection; and the third was successfully treated with fluconazole.
