In order to detect polymorphic DNA sequences in the bulbs of single human hairs, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used. Specific hypervariable regions of ApoB gene, D1S80 locus, and sex-specific sequences of X/Y chromosomes were amplified. The amount of DNA isolated from single hair bulbs was measured by fluorometry. Methodological aspects of using PCR for forensic medical examinations of single hairs are discussed.
