The incidence of eye disease in dogs in a veterinary academic hospital: 1772 cases

Records of eye disease in dogs presented to the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, South Africa, between 1990 and 1995 were examined. Breeds are tabulated in correlation with the eye diseases of which they were most commonly afflicted. German Shepherd and Maltese dogs each accounted for more than twice as many records as any other breed. The most important diseases according to breed incidence were cataracts, glaucoma, corneal ulcers, progressive retinal atrophy, iris prolapse, pannus/pigmentation and keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Problem areas in private practice were identified and discussed.
