A 3-year study involved 2779 dogs that were exposed to contaminated environments, first at 4 different country dog pounds and again at a medical research animal facility. A single 25 ml dose of canine serum collected from healthy donor dogs housed in an environment contaminated with infectious agents was given to 1652 dogs. The remaining 1127 dogs served as untreated controls. The incidence of respiratory tract disease was reduced among the serum recipients even though the serum was administered after the initial exposure. Reexposure of the donor dogs to the contaminated environment was necessary for their serums to be effective in preventing respiratory tract disease.
