This paper reviews the performance of the Mahi-Kadana irrigation project, Gujarat, India, and in particular looks at: (1) the interim position of irrigated agriculture in the area concerned; and (2) the performance of a particular micro-area of 1000 ha in terms of (a) various aspects of the farm economy, and (b) farmers' reactions to specific measures introduced, such as improved water delivery systems. The data required for the study were collected in both the years 1984/85 and 1989/90, in order that comparisons could be drawn. The paper notes that the micro-area pilot project has been devised in such a way that it is possible for it to be replicated over the whole project area.
