Is it justified to give a massive dose of follicular hormone to induce ovulation? Problems of the origin of a positive estrogen feedback mechanism

Treatment of anovulation in 14 women with intravenous administration of 20 mg conjugated estrogens in reported. Estrogens were given on the 13th or 14th day of the cycle, and resulted in pregnancies in 5 women and in a change from monophasic to biphasic cycles in 2 others. In the author's view, these results are probably due to an estrogen-triggered f eedback mechanism involving the hypothalamus as well as the ovaries. The possible operation of such a positive estrogen feedback mechanism is discussed in detail on the basis of animal experimentation and human clinical information.
